THE VETO ON IMAGES IN MONOTHEISTIC RELIGIONS

The author undertakes a comparative analysis of some known monotheistic religions tracing the reasons, preconditions and specific manifestations of the prohibition of the manufacture and worship of divine images. He comes to the conclusion that strict prohibition on that score existed not at the earliest stages of the development of the said religions but was a result of some of their internal reformation processes. Those processes can hardly be accounted for within the framework of the same model of their appearance. Theological, ideological and purely practical factors may have played a different role in that. In many instances it is possible to bring to light considerable differences between the official theological doctrine and the beliefs and religious practices of the ordinary people.
